How it Works

Waste oils like hydraulic, transmission, and crankcase oils are stored in a tank. An electric pump uses suction to draw the oil through a series of filters and into the burner assembly at the furnace. It is here that the oil is heated and atomized using compressed air to produce a volatile mist that is ignited by a constant spark of electricity. This burner also provides a precise amount of combustion air that will allow the fuel to burn cleanly. Once the combustion chamber warms up to temperature, a high velocity fan moves air around the hot chamber and into the shop area. All exhaust gases are vented to the outside using a class A chimney.

Waste Oil FAQ’s

  • If you do not generate waste oil, then waste oil heat is probably not ideal for you as it is illegal to transport large volumes of waste oil without proper permits. Please see state and local laws.

  • Scientifically, the number is around 160,000 - 240,000 btu’s. The actual heat output depends on the type and condition of the furnace as well as the type of oil being burnt.

  • Waste oil furnaces are designed to burn clean. If your heater is producing smoke or smells funny, then it probably needs to be serviced.

  • Consult your owner’s manual for your specific unit. Burning oil will produce ash that needs to be cleaned every 600-800 hours of run time for the furnace. The oil filters should be cleaned at this time also. Most of our clients need their furnace serviced once or twice a year.

  • That depends on the size, features, and insulation of your building. A good rule of thumb is around 1/2-3/4 gallons of oil per square foot per year. So, a 5,000sf shop should plan on burning 2,500-3,750 gallons of oil each year.

  • No. Waste oil heaters are currently only UL listed for commercial and industrial use only.
